RECORD REVIEW
Silke Berlinn-RetroPunk
Teutonic chanteuse, Silke Berlinn, developed her talents working with major talents in New York City, the San Francisco Bay Area and most recently in Los Angeles, California. This diverse "upbringing" has given her the unique ability to combine the gritty, street realism of Lou Reed, the soulful punch of the New York Dolls and the pop sensibilities of early 60's girl groups into her own distinctive mix of rock and roll music.
Her newest release, Retropunk, features nine compelling examples of her songwriting skills, delivered in her own distinctive, and engaging style. The LP was produced by the multi-talented, Paul Roessler, who collaborated, and also contributed keyboards throughout the album. Additional Angelino guest-stars, Rikk Agnew, and Don Bolles, are also featured on several tracks, along with Silke's current band members, bringing together a tight collection of songs that are well worth your attention.
Standout tracks include, City Lover, which could fit right in on any Saturday Night at Max's Kansas City or CBGB's, and just as easily on the dance floor of any popular club. Silicon Valley, hints at something larger than a region south of San Francisco or cosmetic surgery, a pleasant surprise with a token cover version of, the Beatles, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, delivered in Silke's own, personal signature style, and this reporter's personal favorite, U Don't Own Me, a catchy number that continues to run through your head for days after listening to it.
In addition to being an accomplished Author, Songwriter, Poet and a real pro in the recording studio, Silke is equally talented onstage, having performed with many notable talents, Including, Blondie, Willy DeVille, Jerry Nolan, Cheetah Chrome, Jack Grisham, her early punk band, Teenage News and many others. Make sure not to miss her show if you're fortunate enough to have her play your town!
RetroPunk is available on Vinyl and CD online, or at a better establishment near you.
